The 2024 Annual Lakeside Hoops Basketball Tournament marked another incredible chapter in the journey of Rise Above GTA. This year was one of blessings, challenges, and significant milestones, culminating in a community event that blended fierce competition, education, and unity. Held on September 28th at the Skillz-TRIO Sportsplex & Event Centre, the tournament attracted a diverse group of participants and supporters, making it a family-friendly event to remember.
Eight talented teams came ready to compete for the $1500 cash prize, showcasing skill and determination on the court. Among them were the reigning champions, Goodfellaz, who aimed for a historic third consecutive win. However, the day belonged to Guyzers, who claimed the title after a thrilling finals match, bringing the crowd to their feet with excitement and cheers. The atmosphere was electrifying, with familiar faces returning to support and enjoy the day’s activities, demonstrating the enduring appeal of Lakeside Hoops.
This year’s program extended beyond basketball, emphasizing community education and awareness. During the intermission, Nurse Karen Fleming delivered an impactful presentation on Sickle Cell disease, highlighting the urgent need for blood donations from the BIPOC community. Attendees had the chance to join the Canadian Blood Services’ group blood donation day and register for the stem cell registry, a vital step in supporting patients affected by this life-altering condition.
